Description
AFRL currently pursues a number of research efforts involving the interaction of high power electromagnetic waves with plasmas, as well as with high temperature materials. AFRL's Directed Energy Directorate (AFRL/RD) is interested in the development of laboratory-scale experiments and associated diagnostics for the purposes of validating analytical and computational plasma chemistry models related to HPM-driven plasmas. These plasma diagnostics could include, but are not limited to, passive, active, and self-excited electron plasma resonance spectroscopy, interferometry, and probes.
Additionally, AFRL/RD is interested in developing a fundamental understanding of the complex dielectric properties of ceramics and other materials (as well as the dependence of these properties on frequency, temperature, and other parameters), which is necessary to effectively utilize electromagnetic energy to controllably heat materials to high temperatures. This work could be expected to include characterization of complex dielectric properties as a function of temperature using free space or quasi-free space methods, study of time-dependent material heating due to absorption of high power millimeter-wave or microwave beams, and investigations of surface and bulk damage of material samples due to heating with electromagnetic radiation.
It is recommended that applicants have a background in plasmas or high temperature materials and familiarity with HPM sources and propagation. Experience developing and using plasma, thermal, and HPM-relevant diagnostics would also be beneficial for interested applicants.

Additional Benefits
Relocation
Awardees who reside more than 50 miles from their host laboratory and remain on tenure for at least six months are eligible for paid relocation to within the vicinity of their host laboratory.
