Description
Observing the air-sea transition zone (the upper ocean, air-sea interface, and marine atmospheric boundary layer) has been very difficult. Research ships and aircraft have been the only platforms that can provide such observations, which are expensive and logistically challenging. Recently, efforts have been made to experiment observations of the air-sea transition zone using combined uncrewed systems (e.g., underwater gliders, saildrones, and airdrones). The objective of this project is to quantify the feasibility and uncertainties of this approach through virtual sampling of combined uncrewed systems in simulations by a high-resolution ocean-atmosphere-wave coupled model. Qualifications of the successful candidate for this project include (a) experiences in field observations and numerical modeling, (b) independence in research thinking and teamwork attitude, (c) an excellent record of journal publications in comparison to peers, and (d) effective oral and written communication skills. The research opportunity is original for one year, renewable to three years depending on the performance.
