Neutron-inelastic and quasi-elastic scattering and diffraction techniques are used to study the vibrations, reorientations, and structure of molecular and complex ionic crystals, including fullerenes and compounds based on fullerenes. In addition, the diffusion of atomic and molecular species is studied in materials such as protonic and ionic conductors. The complementary techniques of infrared and Raman spectroscopy are used in some cases. Results are often compared with predictions of first-principles calculations. Information is obtained on interatomic and intermolecular forces; crystal structure and dynamics are correlated with thermodynamic properties, phase transitions, and chemical behavior.
