Quantification of Bacteria Colonization on Controlled Surfaces
Material Measurement Laboratory, Biosystems and Biomaterials Division
NIST only participates in the February and August reviews.
Bacteria colonization and subsequent biofilm development can result in infections and medical device failure for applications including dental restorative fillings, orthopedic devices, contact lenses, and catheters. Yet, methods to quantify biofilm properties are lacking. This research opportunity focuses on the development and application of novel, quantitative methods to evaluate biofilm initiation and development as a function of surface properties. These biofilm measurements can be coupled with well-characterized substrates and computational models to identify mechanisms responsible for biofilm-material interactions, ultimately leading toward novel materials that control biofilm growth.
