The chemistry of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation from atmospheric volatile organic compounds (VOC) is an area of significant uncertainty in accurately estimating global radiative forcing. We are interested in probing the chemical mechanisms and kinetics of the oxidation reactions of VOC that lead to condensable material. Reactions of suitable photolabile precursors are initiated through ultraviolet photolysis and proceed in a laminar flow cell. A moveable probe is used to sample the evolving particle distribution, and time-dependent changes in the particle and gas-phase properties are monitored with a variety of techniques. Diagnostic tools that may be applied to the study of these systems include tandem differential mobility analysis (tDMA), HPLC, tandem MS, GC-MS, UV-VIS, and FTIR spectroscopy. We invite proposals that seek to examine SOA formation chemistry utilizing novel reaction schemes or creative analysis strategies.
