Description

We develop and utilize state-of-the-art experimental and computational techniques to acquire, evaluate, and correlate thermodynamic data of standard reference quality with a particular emphasis on mixtures.

A wide variety of experimental apparatus are available, including an isochoric pressure-volume-temperature (pVT) apparatus for measurements from 14 K-400 K at pressures to 35 MPa and two dual-sinker densimeters of standard reference quality for pVT measurements from 90 K-520 K, with pressures to 40 MPa. Sound-speed and heat-capacity data are also extremely important in developing accurate equations of state. Apparatus are available to measure these properties from cryogenic temperatures to 500 K including a twin cell calorimeter for constant-volume heat capacities and a spherical resonator for sound speeds. Apparatus being developed include a high-temperature pVT apparatus capable of measurements up to 1000 K, a wide-ranging calorimeter covering 5 K-400 K, and an effusion apparatus for mPa-level vapor pressures over temperatures of 100 K-400 K.

Closely integrated experimental, theoretical, and computational programs for understanding and characterizing technically important fluids and fluid mixtures are ongoing. Major emphasis has been on the properties of hydrocarbon gases and their mixtures, CO2-rich mixtures, refrigerant mixtures, aqueous systems, and ionic liquids.
