Extensive experimental and theoretical research into the physics of high-power (~MA, ~MV) diodes is being carried out using pulsed-power generators. These generators and other available facilities are described under 64.15.76.B2964, “Pulsed Power.” Diodes are used on these generators to produce intense electron and ion beams. Aside from particle beam research itself, applications also include material response studies and radiation production. Specific diodes being studied include pinched-beam diodes, series diodes, multiple-cathode diodes, inverse diodes, plasma-filled diodes, and ion-beam diodes. Application of the cylindrical rod-pinch diode to high-power, pulsed radiography is an active area of investigation. Intense ion-beam production, focusing, and transport for ion inertial confinement fusion is being investigated. Theoretical efforts in all these areas using both analytic techniques and numerical simulations complement the experimental work.
