We have a wide variety of research programs on the microstructural evolution of Naval materials and the effects of those changes on the observed physical properties. These efforts examine the microstructural characteristics (dislocations, precipitates, grain boundaries, crystallography, and phase distributions/transformations) that give rise to the observed properties and the variations caused by changes in the chemistry, thermomechanical exposure, or processing conditions. Research areas focus on structural materials, joining techniques, and additive manufacturing and currently span ferrous, titanium, and aluminum alloys. The Naval Research Laboratory has an excellent array of microstructural characterization facilities (HREM, TEM, SEM/EBSD, APT, XCMT, and FIB) available for use by the successful candidates, in addition to a wide variety of material fabrication and processing equipment.

Relocation
Awardees who reside more than 50 miles from their host laboratory and remain on tenure for at least six months are eligible for paid relocation to within the vicinity of their host laboratory.
