Description

We are interested in all phases of research and development of new and/or compact high-power microwave (HPM) devices and systems, including initial concept of the device, computer simulation and analysis of how the device will operate, building and testing the device in the laboratory, and demonstrating the device capabilities. As the premiere research facility for HPM, the Air Force Research Laboratory at Kirtland collaborates with researchers at several National Laboratories, universities, and contractors. Applicants should have a strong background in any of the following areas: compact pulsed power generators, electron beam generation including vacuum diode design, microwave tube design, microwave amplifier design, pulse charging transmission lines with fast switches, design of antenna systems including coupling of the microwave tube to the antenna, design of coupling techniques to allow phase locking of HPM devices, and analytical or numerical modeling of the tasks listed above.

We currently conduct research on (1) materials used to fabricate HPM sources; (2) magnetized and unmagnetized electron beam conversion to an HPM pulse; (3) materials and components for compact pulsed power; and (4) extraction, radiation, and collection of an HPM pulse. We also have a very strong interaction between simulation and experiment of HPM sources, including developing physics models of new processes found in HPM sources and improving the quantitative comparison between simulation and experiment.
