Description
This opportunity includes the development of new high-performance computing solutions to the physics and biology of laser-tissue interactions. We are interested in laser sources from the ultraviolet through the far infrared with pulse durations from femtoseconds to continuous-wave. Research topics available include theoretical analysis and numerical simulations relating to (1) the thermodynamics and optics of tissues illuminated by laser sources; (2) propagation light in living tissues subject to linear and nonlinear mechanisms; (3) thermo-acoustic response and ablation of tissues by laser sources; (4) mechanisms for damage along with associated rate-process models; and (5) interplay between the damage mechanisms, mechanical, thermodynamics, and propagation effects (multiphysics models).
Selected applicants should expect to work with AFRL staff, collaborating university faculty, and summer students at the graduate and undergraduate level to develop and then integrate model components with existing in-house models, increasing the scope and the applicability of resulting research findings across the laser frequency and pulse property spectrum.
