Description
This research opportunity involves novel functional two-dimensional (2D) materials and their heterostructures for electronics and optoelectronics applications. In recent years, the 2D materials landscape has expanded beyond transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) to materials such as metal thiophosphates (e.g. CuInP2S6, CrTe2 and FePS3) that exhibit multiferroic properties at various temperatures and pressures. Some of these materials are also piezo- and pyro-electric, and can greatly expand the applications of 2D materials. This opportunity involves the mechanical and chemical exfoliation of these functional 2D materials, which will be synthesized in single-crystal form in the Air Force Crystal Growth Center at AFRL. The exfoliated mono- and few-layer functional 2D materials will be characterized through piezoresponse force microscopy and Raman spectroscopy at high pressure (up to 20 GPa) and low temperatures (down to 20 K). Other characterization methods include thermal, electrical and magnetic characterization in a PPMS, including pressure-dependent resistivity measurements. Device fabrication and measurement expertise is desired, as is the ability to transfer and make twisted heterostructures with other 2D materials such as graphene, hBN and TMDs. These research efforts to will complement ongoing work in the research team on the exfoliation and printing of flexible piezoelectric and ferroelectric devices.
