Description

Our lab is focused on studying arthropod visual systems to uncover novel principles for the design of next-gen optical systems. One enduring challenge is how to improve sensor vision in a noisy or dim environment to achieve maximum range of correct identification. We are soliciting candidates who will work with government mentors and visiting senior scientists in our lab on the development of computational and optical models to examine how different parameters affect an animal’s ability to detect point sources and extended objects, as well as examine spatial summation as a means to improve visual performance. The selected fellow will also have the opportunity to work directly with biological data, such as generating 3-D reconstructions from micro-CT imaging of the eyes of unusual deep-sea animals that have achieved optimal balances between sensitivity and resolution, to inform potential inputs to computational models. Developing such bioprincipic optimal summation models will also allow for direct comparison and testing of the efficacy of various multi-aperture camera systems we have in our lab. Thus, applicants are preferred who have experience in mathematical modeling, programming, and knowledge of optical/camera systems, as well as an interest in applying these skills to biological systems.
