Description

High-performance elastomers are critical for extending the durability of emerging applications like wearable devices, soft robotics, and artificial muscles. However, the mechanical integrity and functional capability of these materials are frequently compromised in extreme thermal environments. To address these limitations, this project calls for proposals that advance the mechanical characterization, processing and design of elastomers for extreme conditions. To address the need for high-performance elastomers in extreme environments, this project calls for proposals with novel approaches to: (1) advance our understanding of mechanical properties in elastomers across a wide thermal range, and (2) develop strategies to enhance their performance in extreme conditions. Solutions leveraging advanced characterization techniques and novel design strategies—such as incorporating self-healing components, optimizing molecular architecture, or designing new chemistries for elastomers in ultra-low temperatures that are compatible with additive manufacturing—are highly encouraged.
