Description

The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), Bioeffects Division (RHD), seeks a qualified researcher in Biology or Related Fields.

The mission of RHD is to understand the fundamental mechanisms underlying the interaction of directed energy (DE) with biological systems to mitigate risks associated with warfighter exposure to DE sources. We seek to investigate the bioeffect of electromagnetic fields on cells. We investigate effects of exposures to electromagnetic fields at a range of frequencies and intensities to assesses potential positive or negative changes in the cell function and state. We also investigate the effects of electromagnetic fields alone or in combination with other AF occupational stressors. Our goal is to provide a scientific basis to answer the following questions: (1) What are the exact biophysical and biochemical mechanisms that govern electromagnetic field interaction with biological cells? (2) Can these mechanisms be exploited for selective cell stimulation and cellular resilience. This research topics will use cell culture and molecular biology techniques, such as viability/proliferation, gene expression, epigenetic patterns, CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing, etc., as well as spectroscopy, microscopy, and data analysis/processing.

Under the guidance of a mentor, you will gain hands-on experience to complement your education and support your academic and professional goals. Along the way, you will engage in activities and research in several areas. These include, but are not limited to:

·         Gaining experience in active Department of Defense research, with access to state-of-the-art equipment

·         Collaborating to plan, design, and conduct interdisciplinary studies in the fields of cellular and molecular biology, imaging, and data processing

·         Communicating research in written and oral presentations
