The main objective of this research is to study the effect of directed energy on biological material and determine the resulting impact. To support this mission, this opportunity includes the development of new ultrafast spectroscopic techniques for the investigation of protein interaction with a range of the electromagnetic spectrum (EM). In addtion, our team has the following capabilities: 2DIR, UV/VIS - NIR Transient Absorption Spectroscopy (fs/ps time scales), FTIR, UV/VIS absorption. Our group collaborates with various AFRL laboratories to focus on both the molecular mechanisms, as well as whole cell models, for the development of new, protein-based sensing elements. Molecular simulations, coupled with ultrafast spectroscopic techniques, will be performed in order to validate the engineered proteins as well as provide novel capabilities to AFRL. The laboratory offers extensive laser facilities that operate in the VIS-IR range, as well as MHz-GHz frequency sources. Selected candidates should expect to help design and build optical experiments, collect and analyze complex spectral data, and collaborate with AFRL staff. Understanding of empirical MD simulations and density functional theory (DFT), time-dependent DFT (TDDFT), as well as quantum calculations is also desired.
