The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) leads the discovery, development and integration of warfighting technologies for our air, space and cyberspace forces. The AFRL 711th  Human Performance Wing (HPW)’s mission is to advance human performance in air, space, and cyberspace through research, education, and consultation. The 711 HPW mission encompasses a strong program in Biotechnology, which is recognized as an emerging Critical Technology Area (CTA) by the US Undersecretary of Defense for Research and Engineering   [1], and is emphasized as a key component for research and development to  advance the Unites States' Economy [EO14081]. Within the Biotechnology mission, AFRL 711 HPW performs human subjects trials, organ-on-a-chip in vitro studies [2], and infectious disease surveillance epidemiology, leveraging the most advanced 'omic data methods, including: physiological wearable sensors, whole genome DNA, metagenomics, RNA transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, microbiome analysis, and cognitive sensing.  This position will help lead research studies to analyze multi-omic data sets, develop advanced methods to interpret large and complex 'omic information, and drive major discoveries that will enhance and sustain US Airmen and Guardians.  In the laboratory Dr. Seth Faith (Senior Scientist for Biotechnology and Biomedical Sciences,, the fellow will innovate technologies focused on advanced analytics, such as AI/ML [3], and also engage with the larger biotechnology community at AFRL, and collaborators across the DoD, NATO, academia, and industry. Thus, the fellow will have ample opportunities to lead cutting-edge bioanalytical research, network with the broader community, learn aspects of science and technology policy, and provide valuable insight to Biotechnology strategy for the DoD and its partners.
