Description

This research focuses on better understanding storm-scale processes using observations, modeling, and theory. The main focus is on characteristics of low-level rotation and tornadoes in supercells and/or QLCSs, but analysis techniques may be applied to other hazards such as large, damaging hail and winds. Primary efforts of this project include, but are not limited to, collecting and analyzing observations from field campaigns and using high-resolution modeling techniques to simulate thunderstorm evolution. This yields multi-scale understanding of relationships between larger-scale storm environments, individual thunderstorm behavior, and the production (or lack thereof) of severe hazards. Related work includes better understanding differences between storm environments that support different types of storms, examining how storm-scale processes or storm-environment relationships are represented in high-resolution or operational models, and applying novel techniques to construct comprehensive storm-scale datasets for further analysis.
