Description
The Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center (TFHRC) is seeking a postdoctoral associate to further develop materials, tests, and processes to improve resilience of asphalt pavements.
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is placing an increasing emphasis on resilience. In the asphalt pavements space, this translates to better identification of materials which will withstand changing climatic demands. The following types of materials and research are of particular interest in this opportunity, although this does not preclude other innovative technologies:
- Self-healing materials;
- Age-retarding materials;
- Alternative binders;
- Materials with potential to reduce carbon footprint;
- Embrittlement assessment;
- Improved durability and resistance to oxidative and ultraviolet-induced aging; and
- Reactive polymers.
The Associate will work alongside members of FHWA’s Asphalt Binder and Mixture Laboratory and have extensive collaborative opportunities inside and outside of FHWA. The following skills are preferred of the postdoctoral associate:
- Extensive experience characterizing asphalt materials;
- Work with explicit ties to oxidative and/or ultraviolet aging;
- Experience with blending of asphalt materials and additives; and
- Documented evidence of a strong publication record (dependent on applicant’s career standing).
