Description

The FHWA Research, Development, and Technology Office is seeking expertise to provide advice on development of a research program on AI applications to advance the technology of transportation operations, including traffic signal operations, data processing and analysis, simulations, and Cooperative Driving Automation (CDA). 

While nation's traffic signal operations have been greatly improved, advances in communications, cloud computing and data analysis have outpaced the capability of the workforce to develop business processes and tools to take advantages of this information to enhance decision making. Future improvements may require the application of new technology. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) have been recognized to have great potential for achieving breakthroughs in traffic management and signal operations, due to very sucessful applications in many engineering fields and promissing outcomes in early stage of applications in traffic operations.

A renowed scholar is sought to advise on development of an AI research program in transportations and conduct research to help fulfill some of the following objectives:

1. AI Applications on Signal Operations; which include:

(1) Traffic pattern match for activating pre-stored traffic timing plan,

(2) AI aided traffic data processing and analysis, including data fusion and integration from multiple sources to form useful knowledge for signal operations,

2. Using AI aided short term predictions to improve adaptive signal control methodology,

3. Evaluate the capability of AI in distributed simulation to help improvement in safety, efficiency, reliability, and reduction of fule consumption and emissions,

4. Conduct AI aided shockwave studies to improve network situation awareness, and to support CDA platoon operations.

The renowned scholar is expected to collaborate with Office of Safety and Operations R&D staff and Saxton Transportation Operations Lab research staff at TFHRC on research activities, and with other research agencies and organizations, such as IEEE, ASCE, TRB, ITS America, etc.

Level:  Open to Postdoctoral and Senior applicants

Stipend

Base Stipend Travel Allotment Supplementation
$67,000.00 $4,000.00

Experience Supplement:
Postdoctoral and Senior Associates will receive an appropriately higher stipend based on the number of years of experience past their PhD.
