The Coatings and Corrosion Laboratory (CCL) at FHWA’s Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center (TFHRC) in McLean, VA is seeking a talented research associate to support the group’s current and emerging research in the field of corrosion modeling and monitoring. CCL conducts research to advance the application of, and develop solutions for, corrosion prevention and mitigation for highway infrastructure. The laboratory focuses its research on improving the durability and performance of innovative corrosion-resistant metals and coating systems to prevent corrosion damage and improve structural preservation. The CCL group at TFHRC primarily conducts applied corrosion engineering research that aims to develop solutions for highway infrastructure asset owners.
The selected candidate will have the opportunity to develop numerical analysis solutions and corrosion measurement in support of the lab’s ongoing and future experimental research studies. The ideal candidate has experience with numerical modeling and instrumentation and is knowledgeable about corrosion, electrochemistry, metal, and concrete materials.
Of particular interest are candidates with interest in the following topics:
· Corrosion modeling and analysis of steel and concrete elements.
· Corrosion measurement and monitoring of laboratory test specimen.
The researcher is expected to work collaboratively with federal and contract staff in the TFHRC Coatings and Corrosion Laboratory and other laboratories within the FHWA Office of Infrastructure Research and Development. The researcher will also be expected to interface with other FHWA offices, relevant industry groups, external stakeholders, and external collaborators.
