The U.S. transportation system is entering a new era of infrastructure management defined by data-driven insights, digital connectivity, and real-time responsiveness. As part of this transformation, the FHWA Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) Laboratory seeks a postdoctoral researcher to advance research at the intersection of structural monitoring (SM), artificial intelligence (AI), and digital infrastructure. This opportunity will support the federal research agenda focused on transforming how infrastructure condition is assessed, monitored, and managed over its life cycle using emerging technologies.
The selected candidate will work as part of a multidisciplinary research team focused on:
· Developing and validating the integration of SM results to support the creation of digital twins of transportation infrastructure.
o Integrating AI/ML algorithms with sensor data to support predictive modeling of structural performance and deterioration.
o Designing frameworks for real-time integration of current and predictive SM results into a connected data environment that supports digital infrastructure and enable proactive decision-making.
o Supporting the development of an Industry Foundation Class (IFC) OpenBIM based digital twin of the infrastructure assets which enable more effective bridge management, including visualization, data fusion, and risk forecasting.
The research will contribute to FHWA’s vision of connected, intelligent infrastructure by advancing the technical foundations for digital infrastructure and digital twin implementation. Deliverables include open-source tools, data models, technical papers, and prototype digital twin modules for selected highway components.
