Description

The Fire Research Division of NIST’s Engineering Laboratory develops and maintains a computational fluid dynamics software package for modeling building and wildland fires called the Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS). FDS is a block structured Cartesian LES code for low-speed flow which uses a high-order cutcell-immersed boundary method for complex geometry and is specifically tuned for thermal transport and fire dynamics.  FDS has been scaled up to 10,000 cores on Titan. The aim of this project is to improve code performance for serial, OpenMP, MPI, and potentially GPU computing. As the code has scaled up, we have also faced challenges in visualizing and analyzing large data sets. The visualization tool used with FDS is called Smokview. We are seeking a computer scientist to take FDS and Smokeview to the next level in compute performance while maintaining a practical, user-friendly code environment for engineers who are not experts in high-performance computing.
