Description
Research opportunities are available to develop the measurement science and standards to support the research, development, and commercialization of new lighting technology, with a major emphasis on solid-state lighting products. NIST has developed unique capabilities to support this effort, including the Spectrally Tunable Lighting Facility, which illuminates a room with virtually any light spectrum to investigate the perceived color quality of light sources, the effect of light source chromaticity on perception of a visual scene, and the optimization of the lighting for specific applications. Other facilities that are available include (1) the Center for High Accuracy Retroreflection Measurements to quantify the performance of retroreflective materials used in roadway safety; (2) the Color and Appearance Metrology Facility to quantify color and appearance attributes over a range of illumination and viewing geometries using a five-axis goniometer; and (3) photometric measurement capabilities which include a 4 m photometric bench, a 2.5 m diameter integrating sphere for measurements of various light sources, and a new capability to investigate the impact of aging on the photometric performance of light-emitting diodes (LEDs).
