Description
Additive manufacturing (AM) by laser or electron-beam melting of metal powder has emerged in this century as a transformational technology for fabricating near-net-shape metallic parts and generating microstructures that are infeasible with conventional metallurgy. However, the degree of commercial adoption of AM parts is impeded by current limitations on material validation, which are linked to limitations on post-process nondestructive evaluation (NDE) with conventional methods. This project seeks to develop innovative methods for nondestructively characterizing AM alloys and identifying relationships between as-manufactured characteristics and in-service mechanical performance. Post-doctoral opportunities include research on linear and nonlinear elastic and anelastic properties of macroscale and mesoscale specimens measured with resonant or pulsed ultrasonic techniques, three-dimensional microscale material structure determined from X-ray computed tomography, microscale and nanoscale structure and composition determined by scanning-electron and transmission-electron microscopy, and modeling the effects of microscale and nanoscale structure on nondestructively measured properties and associated mechanical performance.
