Description

Our research team is performing foundational experimental research to develop an improved understanding of the physics of the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) and the capabilities and limitations of current QAHE devices for applications such as electrical standards. A reliable and robust resistance standard that operates under the near zero-field conditions necessary for the superconducting integrated circuits that comprise Josephson voltage standards will support the simultaneous dissemination of all three quantum electrical standards: current, voltage, and resistance. We design, fabricate, and carefully characterize QAHE devices based on stacks of two-dimensional materials or magnetic topological insulators to develop the fundamental understanding of the physics of the QAHE necessary to design and develop new quantum resistance standards. Additional applications in quantum information science (QIS) can be envisioned for robust QAHE devices. Quantum transport measurements are carried out on test structures and prototypical devices at temperatures from approximately 300 mK to 400 K and in magnetic fields up to 14 T.
