Quantum materials are those in which electronic correlations lead to emergent collective behavior with exotic and potentially useful properties. Current topics of interest include, but are not limited to, unconventional superconductors, quantum phase transitions, quantum magnetism, and topological magnetic phases.

An emphasis of this opportunity is synthesis of new materials, ranging from polycrystals to large single crystals to thin films, followed by appropriate electronic and magnetic property characterization. These capabilities are available through collaboration with the University of Maryland. Neutron scattering at the NIST Center for Neutron Research is used to study the lattice and magnetic structure and excitations to better understand the fundamental interactions in these materials. We are also interested in new and complementary measruement technique development.

Current research projects include spin-triplet and topological superconductors (eg UTe2), Weyl and other metals with strong spin-orbit interactions, and magnetic skyrmion phases.  Applicants are encouraged to contact the adviser to discuss possible research projects.
