Predicting the bulk behavior of a material system based on its microstructure and the behavior of its constituents is an important aspect of materials design. Our current research involves the development of modeling tools for microstructure-sensitive materials characterization, including finite-element tools and crystal plasticity modeling, extensible to new classes of constitutive models. The current application domain is the relationship between the macroscopic deformation behavior of structural and mechanical materials and the corresponding microstructural deformation, internal to grains, and intergrain interaction. Connecting length scales between microstructural features and bulk behavior is an important data link in the materials design problem, and contributions to the understanding of structure-property relationships in this domain are an important part of the materials innovation infrastructure, central to the Materials Genome Initiative.
