The use of DNA for human identification purposes has been applied in the field of forensic science for over 20 years. NIST develops standards and genetic tests to support the forensic science community. Areas of interest include typing of short tandem repeat (STR) markers by capillary electrophoresis and next-generation sequencing, mitochondrial genome sequencing, deconvolution of DNA mixtures using software and lab-based methods, rapid PCR methods, integrated rapid DNA testing, digital PCR methods, analysis of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers for assessing identity, bio-geographical ancestry, and trait prediction. Projects focus on the development and application of new and emerging technologies to solve forensic problems and facilitate technology transitions within the forensic community.
