The Communications Technology Laboratory (CTL) uses high-speed electronic signals to characterize both measurement equipment and on-wafer devices for next-generation communication systems. We currently grow ultrafast materials based on rare-earth impurities and fabricate photomixers/photoconductive switches using our state-of-the-art cleanroom facilities. These optoelectronic devices are then measured using electro-optic sampling techniques to characterize their impulse response. We are looking for a postdoctoral fellow to help develop next generation photomixers/photoconductive switches and measurement techniques to extend our electronic signal calibration traceability up to 1 terahertz. To develop the techniques necessary for measurement and application of these devices, a multidisciplinary background in electrical engineering, optics, and material science is preferred. Proposals should complement and expand on current NIST work in the areas of waveform metrology, large signal network analysis, mm-wave and terahertz signal generation, and photonics.
