Description

Optical frequency combs, especially those generated through the use of electro-optic modulators, are ideally suited to interrogate optical cavities. Recently, we have generated frequency combs through the use of direct digital synthesis and utilized these combs to probe optomechanical accelerometers [1]. These optomechanical accelerometers are described in detail in Ref. [2] and are based upon a Fabry-Perot geometry where one of the mirrors is attached to a movable proof mass. In combination with the electro-optic frequency comb readout we have achieved exceptionally high sensitivity and linearity in the resulting acceleration measurement. Future work will continue to develop new approaches for comb generation as well as their application to these type of sensors and chemical systems.
