Quantum Sensors for Charged Particle Detection and Neutron Physics

We are developing unique quantum sensors (specifically thermal kinetic inductance detectors, or TKIDs) for low-energy charged particle detection. The driving goal is the realization of a very large area, scalable, high resolution charged particle detector to be used to detect the decay protons and electrons from neutron beta decay. Such detectors could potentially provide significant improvements in the sensitivity of fundamental neutron physics experiments testing the Standard Model. We are currently developing an understanding of how these detectors operate in the chosen regime, involving simulation, testing, and design development. We are also exploring a variety of detector geometries and characterization schemes. Many other applications outside of neutron physics are also possible and open to exploration. The project is small scale and provides opportunities that range from detailed physics simulation to hands on development and operation of a cryogenic detector test bed and experimental design.
