Our project has been developing single photon detectors and sources for use in a variety of applications requiring light at the faintest levels. We are currently involved in the development of superconducting devices such as transition-edge sensors and superconducting nanowire single photon detectors, as well as single photon sources based on quantum dots, spontaneous parametric down conversion, and four-wave mixing. However, careful characterization of these components that is traceable to classical radiometric techniques can be very challenging. Research opportunities include improving our understanding of the fundamental limitations of detectors and sources; development of new ways to package detectors, sources, and components optimized for few photon operation; and developing new measurement techniques or devices to characterize sources, detectors, and optical components at few photon levels.
