Neuromorphic Computing Using Superconducting Optoelectronic Neural Networks
Physical Measurement Laboratory, Applied Physics Division
NIST only participates in the February and August reviews.
Our group is developing a novel platform for implementing advanced neuromorphic computing based on superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors, silicon optical waveguides, and silicon-based light emitting diodes (https://arxiv.org/abs/1610.00053/). Our proposed platform enables each neuron to be connected to hundreds of other neurons with no power or latency penalties, and has the potential to scale to the size of the human brain (1011 neurons). It operates with extremely low power per synaptic event with a very high speed. Research opportunities include development of all experimental aspects of such a system, including design, fabrication and measurements, as well as system modeling.
