Description

Advanced theoretical and computational techniques are used to study combustion fundamentals and systems. Numerical simulations of complex combustion problems require quantitative knowledge of the interplay of chemical, diffusive, radiative, and convective processes. These interactions are time dependent and often nonequilibrium. The program explores fundamental issues in flame and detonation physics, including flame structure and stability, delfagration-to-detonation transition, and flame and detonation ignition; structure; propagation; and suppression. Recent applications of this research center on high-speed propulsion, fires, combustion in multiphase systems, and the practical aspects of combustion instabilities in reacting shear flows; noise and chemical pollution; and detonation based engines.
