Description

Research is under way to develop new techniques for computing unsteady flowfields in and around complex geometries, including development of structured and unstructured grid generation capabilities and the corresponding unsteady flow solution algorithms. Algorithmic research is also being pursued on both vector, parallel, and GPU architectures. Unsteady incompressible and compressible flows investigated include the flow field of fully appended submarines, ships, and missiles, and the pressures on and motion time histories of objects in a shock path.

Unsteady incompressible flow is also being studied for low-Reynolds number flow in biomimetic systems inspired by insect flight and fish fin dynamics. Efficiently computing flows in micro and nanosensors and fuel-cells are also of interest.
