Description
This research focuses on x-ray sources produced by terawatt-level pulsed-power generators. High-voltage electrons interact with high-atomic-number targets to produce intense bremsstrahlung radiation. Bremsstrahlung sources in various geometries provide ten to several hundred keV x-ray sources with different temporal, spatial, and spectral characteristics. In addition, intense soft x-ray sources are produced with imploding plasma loads. Linear z-pinch plasmas formed by imploding gas-puff or wire loads with megampere currents are intense sources of characteristic x-ray line radiations in the region from 1 to 100 keV. Research interests include intense bremsstrahlung sources that are millimeter or less in size and studies of implosions driven by different duration and risetime current pulses. Also, implosions of novel loads, such as capillary-discharge, single-wire, or metallic-vapor plasmas are of interest. Facilities listed under 64.15.76.B2964, “Pulsed Power” are also available for this research.
