Description

Magnetic resonance (MR) is recognized as a powerful tool for obtaining insights into the local structure, dynamics, and properties of a wide range of materials from organic polymers to inorganic semiconductors. Current interests include (1) the relationship between magnetic resonance parameters and electrical and mechanical properties of materials, (2) fundamental properties of nanoscopic materials in comparison with bulk materials, and (3) material blends and miscibility. We are also interested in developing MR techniques for the study of materials, with an emphasis on increasing the sensitivity of the MR experiment.

A commercial 7.0 T multinuclear double resonance system and a commercial 11.7 T multinuclear triple resonance system, both H/X/Y and H/F/X, with a variety of solids and liquids probes are available. In addition, we have a cryostat with optical window for variable temperature down to 4.2 K, a pressure vessel for variable pressure up to 1 GPa, and automated field-stepped ultra wideline NMR, for use on homebuilt instruments at 2.4 and 7 T.  Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance (NQR) capabilities are available, and Magnetic Resonance Force Microscopy (MRFM) is under construction.
