Description

Characterizing the dynamics of polymer chains is fundamental for understanding and predicting most of their physical properties. The gigantic size of polymer molecules implies an enormous number of degrees of freedom, and gives rise to motions encompassing many decades of time over a correspondingly broad range of length scales. Educing the contribution of the various modes of motion from mechanical measurements requires viscoelastic data over a sufficient frequency range (at least 12 decades). We pursue such investigations by using combined spectroscopies, including transient creep, dynamic mechanical, rheo-dielectric, and rheo-optical measurements.
