Description

The modification of the polymers properties by the addition of filler particles has been proven to be  an extremely viable method to improve the physical properties of polymers. However, for conventional fillers a large amount of filler is needed wich often introduces detrimental effects (i.e. brittleness) . Recent technological advances in the synthesis of nanoparticles  offer new exciting opportunities, since their much larger surface area (per unit of volume fraction) makes them much more effective at small volume fractions.  However, the properties of these new nanocomposites cannot be simply predicted by the properties of their components, because their properties depends in large part on the physical properties  of the interface between polymer and filler, which are largely unknwon.

The synthesis of new polymers  nanocomposites with improved dielectric and mechanical properties is pursued by the characterization of their properties with  combination of mechanical and electrical techniques both at the macroscale and at the nanoscale. This investigation aim at characterization of the interface properties to bridge the gap necessary for the rational design of polymer nanocomposites with novel properties.
