Description
The research opportunity focuses on the fundamental nature of hypersonic flight. The research is theoretical. The emphasis is on the interface layer between the vehicle surface and the plasma that is in contact with that surface, known as hypersonic shock wave boundary layer. The reentry vehicle problem itself is extremely interesting and complex phenomena: the plasma is created in a supersonic moving frame with very steep gradients, creating shocks in accelerated non-equilibrium gas. The goal is to develop combination codes and capabilities addressing the non-equilibrium plasma formation, the shock wave dynamics, non-equilibrium plasma chemistry, materials physics, and radiation.
key words
hypersonic modeling, non-equilibrium plasma
