Description

The Geospatial Intelligence Section is part of the NRL’s Center for Geospatial Sciences. We perform basic and applied scientific research leading to advanced technology development, demonstration, and validation efforts focusing on the physical, mechanical, and acoustical properties of the deep ocean, seafloor, estuarine, and riverine environments. We leverage a combination of numerical modeling, detailed laboratory measurements, and field experiments to improve our understanding of these environments. Scientific discoveries improve our ability to collect, analyze, and predict data for environments critical to the mission of the US Navy. Current projects are specifically focused on the use of satellite remote sensing to investigate the nearshore environment. However, opportunities exist for applicants to propose and execute their own field and/or laboratory experiments in relation to this project. A wide variety of acoustic and optical instrumentation is available for use. Experience working with geographic information systems, remotely sensed data, or satellite data is expected. Experience deploying instrumentation at sea or working with instrumentation in the laboratory is desired, but not a requirement.
