Description

The Seafloor Sciences Branch of the Ocean Sciences Division conducts fundamental and applied research that seeks to develop novel technology and scientific knowledge to advance our understanding of the physical, mechanical, and acoustic properties of surficial to sub-bottom sediment deposited in riverine to deep ocean basins. This goal is achieved through a comination of high-performance numerical modeling, laboratoy observations, and field experiments whose results are used to build novel predictive models of local to global sediment properties. Specifically, we seek applicants with experience interpreting shallow seismic (< 50 m depth below seabed) and multibeam echosounder (MBES) datasets. Scientific investigations focusing on the analysis of whether bedform morphology (i.e., seafloor bathymetry) observed in MBES maps formed by unidirectional, oscillatory, or combined-flows is reflected in preserved sub-bottom stratigraphy (shallow seismic surveys) are of particular interest. Although legacy data exists for this postdoctoral opportunity, applicants are encouraged to develop proposals that incorporate their own field and/or laboratory experiments. Experience deploying MBES and seismic systems (e.g., Chirp, Parametric Echosounder, etc.) is desired, but not required.
