The infrared (IR) astronomy program includes observations of astronomical sources between approximately 1 and 200 micrometers using both spectroscopic and broadband instruments, as well as multiwavelength observations and analysis for understanding the formation and evolution of stars, planets, and galaxies and their associated central black holes, as well as the infrared cosmic background. This program includes observations from ground-based telescopes and from airborne or spacecraft platforms, as well as the development of instrumentation. Current programs are 5-200 micron spectroscopy of infrared-bright galaxies, near- and mid-infrared spectroscopy of young stars and protoplanetary disks, modeling of emission lines from accretion disks, and abundance analysis of late-type stars. We encourage participation in national and international collaborations and the use of all national and international observing facilities, ground- and space-based, at IR and other wavelengths.
