Description

This research focuses on the design, synthesis, and development of novel additives and polymeric systems that demonstrate unique functional properties. Such materials are utilized in applications such as wound healing, energy storage (battery and fuel cells), nanoelectronic, magnetic, membrane, air filtration, coating, and composite applications. Our basic research program involves the synthesis, characterization, and evaluation of organic resins/polymers with additives for coatings applications. In addition, much focus has been on the development of self-stratifying additives that present themselves at the coating-air interface, where frequently the desired functionality/physical property is desired. The additive-containing polymers, organometallic-containing compounds/polymers, and nanoparticle/nanocluster-containing materials are frequently utilized in other forms to include but not limited to electrospun nanofibers. Our functional activities have resulted in the development and transition of novel functional coatings and polymer materials. A wide range of instrumentation is available for characterization and evaluation studies.
