This interdisciplinary research focuses on three areas: the cognition of complex visualizations, the study of interruptions and resumptions, and human robot interaction. We use the following techniques: computational cognitive modeling (primarily within the ACT-R framework), human subjects experimentation, eye-tracking, and protocol analysis. We also build interfaces and prototypes to explore ideas within our theoretical frameworks. Our group consists mainly of cognitive psychologists and computer scientists. We frequently work and consult with experts in other domains (e.g., meteorologists and other scientists). Our main goal is to build psychological and computational theories of complex behavior by attempting to scale up current theories to more complex domains and using what we know about cognition to build better systems.
