The objective of this program is to develop theories and computational methods, which describe the fundamental atomic parameters and processes necessary to understand the interaction of charged particles and intense laser beams with atoms, ions, and plasmas. Opportunities exist for the study of the structure of complex atoms and the scattering by electron, proton, and photons. Methods and techniques are employed in the description of collisional excitation, ionization, and recombination processes, as well as multiphoton processes. The effect of the dense plasma microfield environment on atomic structure, collisional and radiative processes, and line-broadening mechanisms are topics of current research interest.
