This research program focuses on linear and nonlinear phenomena in the solar-system plasma environments. Areas of study include (1) physics of solar eruptive phenomena,(2) heliospheric processes, (3) large-scale simulations of the solar wind-magnetosphere-ionosphere system, (4) plasma instabilities and anomalous transport processes in the magnetospheric and ionospheric plasmas, (5) particle acceleration processes, (6) magnetic reconnection, (7) active experimentation in space, and (8) nonlinear dynamics and chaos in space plasmas. A current technical goal is the development of a physics-based algorithm to accurately predict the onset time, severity, and duration of rare but extreme geomagnetic storms in a timely manner. The target forecasting output is the dynamics of geomagnetic fields and ionospheric plasmas in three dimensions 24 to 48 hours in advance of the storm onset. The program involves a combination of theoretical research, numerical simulation, and data interpretation.
