Description

The Naval Research Laboratory is interested in furthering our understanding of additive manufacturing (AM) of materials of interest to the US Navy and we have a wide variety of microscopy and analytical techniques available to examine the microstructures and phase transformations of these materials. Some of the research directions of interest are (1) development of new, optimized AM alloys for marine or expeditionary environment applications; (2) characterizing the microstructures produced during the AM process and determining how those microstructures change/evolve as a function of AM processing parameters, build part location, post-processing treatment, and service condition; and (3) determining how changes in these AM microstructures affect the mechanical and/or corrosion properties of the AM builds. Current focus is on stainless steels and other high-strength, high-toughness steels, although other relevant alloys are also of interest. Selection of a specific program will depend on the programs available and interests of the applicant. Microscopy facilities available include scanning electron microscopes with EBSD and EDS, focused ion beam microscopes, FEI Tecnai G230 analytical transmission electron microscope, energy-filtered JEOL high-resolution TEM, Nion UltraSTEM 200 sub-Å resolution STEM, Xradia 520 Versa X-ray microtomography, and an automated 3D serial sectioning system.
