NRL researchers study the synthesis, structure, and properties of nanomaterials for magnetic, optical, and catalytic applications. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies are crucial for understanding the structure and chemistry of these materials at the atomic-scale. NRL has world-class facilities for nanoscale analytical TEM research, including a Nion UltraSTEM200 aberration-corrected scanning transmission electronmicroscope with 0.7 sr EDS and Dual EELS, a JEOl 220FS with OneView camera, and tomography, in situ biasing and electrochemical holders. Supporting instruments inlcude a FEI Helios G3 FIB-SEM with 3D EBSD and EDS, cryostage, and Kliendeik 4 point probe, Cameca atom probe, and ALD system.
