Description
Our current capability to provide environmental support to the Navy’s battlegroups is characterized by relatively low space and time resolution information from a variety of sources. To alleviate this situation, NRL has advanced the concept of a high-resolution weather structure and information assimilation system specifically designed to meet the end-state tactical needs of the warfighter. The goal of this nowcasting system is to assimilate information from numerical prediction systems, local tactical radars, satellites, and other battlegroup resources to provide a complete four-dimensional atmospheric assessment for the next 0-6 hours that can be used to provide relevant products to tactical decision makers and mission planning systems. Emphasis is placed on both the data retrieval approach to those sensible variables and the data assimilation approach to atmospheric state variable. An innovative data assimilation technique has to be developed to adapt the tactical radar data for short range numerical weather prediction. Emphasis is also placed on the usability of the product. Individuals with experience and interest in remotely sensed data processing, data quality control, data fusion, data assimilation, mesoscale numerical weather prediction, boundary layer meteorology, human-machine interface, and operations research are needed to contribute to this effort.
